My Wilderness Wandering

When the Israelites were delivered out of bondage in Egypt, they thought that it was the end of the journey for them. Nothing could be further from the truth. This was the beginning of the rest of their lives. They experienced many hardships and struggles but they also got a front row view of God’s awesome power and wonder. The Red Sea moment, water from the rock, the Ten Commandments handed down, the serpent encounters. This is just a few of the many Only God moments, yet they had that one problem.

Looking back at Egypt was the Israelites biggest problem!

When they were crying out for God to hear them and see them in bondage, in their trials and tribulations they were enduring, hoping that a savior would show up. They forgot what they had experienced in Egypt. Wandering through the desert, the harsh temperatures with the sand as a companion, exposed to the elements leaves a person fearful of the unknown. We are creatures who gravitate toward what was known somewhat comfortable but not exactly luxurious.

Reaching for or looking forward into luxury when bondage and desert wondering are your only points of reference, makes it more difficult to see purpose or to endure with grace the hardships of your desert wandering. It is impossible to experience the luxuries of God’s lavish promises, if you do not endure the hardships of the desert?
God uses the desert experiences we go through to shape us, to develop His characteristics in us. Our goal in these times should be to maintain a learning stance, always checking to make sure we are positioned to receive but also prepared for the transition which takes place.

  • What are some character traits God is trying to scrub off of you?
  • Are you willing to undergo the grooming?
  • How will you respond to the areas he's shown needs work?

I’d like to encourage you to not be afraid to face your desert experience boldly, confidently knowing that God is in control of it all. Just glance at what He’s already done till now, then know that He knows what’s on the other side of your desert wandering.
